SW 5401 HUMAN BEHAV & SOCIAL ENVIR I
Human Behavior and the Social Environment I is the first course of a two semester sequence. Human development (prenatal through the older years) is explored within the context of the life cycle with emphasis on environmental determinants of behavior; diversity, including race, gender, ethnicity. sexual orientation, disability, and religion; oppression and discrimination. Examination of behavior as it relates to nature and nurture are addressed throughout the semester. Particular emphasis is placed on learning about social work values and ethics as identified by the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and their relevance and importance to professional practice. The course addresses individuals, families, and small groups, as well as the impact of social and economic forces on individual and social systems, within the context of exploring competing methods of understanding. Based on the generalist perspective it will incorporate assessment, fieldwork, practice and policy. Students will increase their awareness of the roles of advocate, enabler, broker, and coordinator.
