Program Description

This program is designed for students wanting to complete a Certificate in Clinical Emergency Medical Technician and enter the workforce. Students explore EMT patient care skills. This certificate program is designed to prepare students for entry-level careers in a variety of healthcare or emergency medical service environments such as fire departments, private ambulance or emergency room facilities. The certificate program consists of didactic and experiential teaching. The Clinical EMT is an Emergency Medical Technician that has expanded their knowledge and skills through professional development to better care for patients under the supervision of a doctor or nurse.

What You Will Learn

Upon completion of the program you will be able to:
1.  Understand and apply emergency medical knowledge when caring for a patient as an entry-level EMT
2.  Assess a patient and use appropriate skills to treat and care for the sick or injured patient
3.  Demonstrate the personal and professional behaviors relative to the role of an entry-level EMT
4.  Integrate knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to function in the emergency health care system

This pathway may be accelerated by applying transfer credit, credit for prior learning, and/or completing one or more additional courses each semester, schedule permitting. The Clinical EMT Certificate includes the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate. While some courses included in Clinical EMT may be taken before completing the EMT Certification, certain courses such as EMS 1080 EMT Internship and EMS 1132 IV/IO for the EMT must be taken after receiving your State of Colorado EMT Certification. It is recommended that you complete the Clinical EMT Certificate courses as listed. • Behavioral Health Pathway: Requires Introduction to Behavioral Healthcare & Wellness (PTE 1010) and MHCI: Preparedness & Empathy (BEH 1001).

• Paramedicine Pathway: Requires Basic Anatomy & Physiology (BIO 1006) and either EMT Clinical Internship (EMS 1080or Advanced ECG Interpretations (HPR 2050).

Important Program Notes: 

*Students interested in becoming more versed in Behavioral Health should take:

  • PTE 1010 Introduction to Behavioral Healthcare & Wellness (3 credits)
  • BEH 1001 MHCI: Preparedness & Empathy (3 credits). Students successfully completing the PTE and BEH courses will earn the Behavioral Health Plus Certificate.

*Students interested in applying for the Paramedic Program at Front Range Community College should take:

  • BIO 1006 Basic Anatomy & Physiology (4 credits)
  • EMS 1080 EMT Clinical Internship OR HPR 2050 Advanced ECG Interpretations (2 credits)

*If pursuing a Paramedic certificate or degree, check the requirements of the program you wish to attend to determine the correct BIO course that is needed for the program you are applying to. The Front Range Community College Paramedic program accepts BIO 1006.

BIO 2101 and BIO 2102 may be substituted for the required BIO course. However, students must have completed both BIO 2101 and 2102 for the substitution to apply.
