PSY 4100 TRANSITION STRATEGIES FOR CAREERS IN PSYCHOLOGY
Not all psychology majors go directly on to graduate school; you may be planning to work for a while or launch a career. This course will focus on increasing career directedness, the ability to formulate workable career goals and act on them, by helping you assess your skills, knowledge, strengths and passions and by facilitating the acquisition of career decision-making skills (including identification of resources, job market research, networking, and marketing yourself successfully).
- 1. Analyze the skills and knowledge gained from your experience and make plans for the rest of your time at Elon;
2. Assess and clarify your personal strengths and develop a vocabulary for talking about yourself and your occupational goals;
3. Learn more about the Student Professional Development Center (SPDC) including their on-line resources such as Elon Job Network;
4. Learn to use various resources to identity target jobs or internships;
5. Explore the resources available on LinkedIn Learning;
6. Talk with recent alums about their career paths;
7. Create a career management document and use it to tailor a résumé for your target internship or job;
8. Create or up-date your LinkedIn profile & learn how to use LinkedIn to network, find job openings, and attract recruiters;
9. Use Big Interview to hone your interviewing skills;
10. Conduct at least one informational interview obtained through LinkedIn or the SPDC Find Alumni feature.
