SPN 1015 INTENSIVE ELEMENTARY SPANISH I AND II
This intensive language course is designed for students with prior knowledge of Spanish. It covers the same content as Elementary Spanish I and II and so fulfills Elon's language proficiency requirement in only one semester. This course builds student literacy in the four skills in Spanish (listening, speaking, writing, and reading), emphasizing active communication and developing students' oral and comprehension skills as they converse and write about daily routines and other topics of a personal nature in present, past and future. Factual information about daily routines and practices in Hispanic cultures will be discussed, and simple literary selections will be introduced. Proficiency goal on the ACTFL scale: Novice high to Intermediate low. Taught in Spanish.
Prerequisite
At least one year of high school Spanish or placement at this level.

Course Outcomes
- 1. Begins to demonstrate awareness of the elements important to members of another culture in relation to its history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices.
- 2. Begins to demonstrate awareness that cultural rules and biases exist in the target culture (C2) and home culture (C1). Expresses some openness to cultural difference, but typically responds with own worldview.
- 3. Begins to identify some cultural differences, although rarely incorporates them in verbal and nonverbal communication. Begins to show awareness that misunderstandings can occur based on those differences.
- 4. Begins to show awareness of different linguistic patterns between languages and sees target languages on its own terms, rather than as the “other” of English.
