HSS 2800 WHAT THE HEALTHCARE?
What the Healthcare? is a play on the What the Health? film raising awareness of systemic issues impacting food consumption. In the What the Healthcare? course we will explore real issues in navigating American healthcare through personal and political lenses. We will also use film/TV to discuss those influences and media/pop culture’s impact on the way Americans consume healthcare. Topics covered will be clustered and include end of life, emergency care, caregiving, disability/chronic disease, crisis/trauma, substance abuse, resource/referral, and medical/legal issues. Theoretically based interventions reflecting ecological, developmental, and brief treatment models will be introduced.

- Students will understand and be able to explain national healthcare policy in
media, economical and legal contexts - Students will know and understand counseling themes in medical settings,
including but not limited to:
• Hospice & Palliative Care
• Physical Rehabilitation Centers
• Chronic Disease Management (primary and specialty care)
• Community Based Medical Management
• Crisis/Trauma
• Substance Abuse Rehabilitation
• Inpatient Medical Settings
• Integrated Primary Healthcare Settings
• Managed Care - Students will increase their self-awareness by identifying and challenging
personal biases/experiences that may impact professional practice in
healthcare settings. - Students will understand and be able to apply ecological/developmental
theories as a conceptual tool for understanding and assessing psychosocial
needs that present in various healthcare settings.
