GER 1015 BEGINNING BUSINESS GERMAN

This course teaches basic professional usage of German, providing a foundation for students preparing for internships or entry-level positions in German companies in the USA or Europe, or for positions in US companies that have German partners. The course covers the fundamentals of standard German, with a specific focus on spoken and written professional communication. Like all German courses at Elon, this course develops students' abilities in reading, writing, listening, speaking, cultural competence, and critical thinking via authentic texts, videos, and group work. Does not satisfy World Language Proficiency requirement. Students successfully completing GER 1015 can enroll in GER 1020.

  1. Language proficiency: Understand relatively simple written and spoken German on concrete topics. Produce written and spoken German that is relatively simple but fluent and accurate.
  2. Cultural proficiency: Describe elements of culture, cultural rules, and values that reflect and shape today’s Germany.
  3. Critical thinking: Critically compare German culture to US-American culture. Explain the implications of cultural differences and connect that knowledge to real-world applications.
