ARH 3000 ISSUES IN L.A. ART & ARCHITECTURE

Course content will vary depending on the expertise of the instructor and might include any aspect of the art and/or architectural history of Greater Los Angeles. Faculty experts could focus on: the impact of historic flashpoints like the Chicano Moratorium or the Rodney King protests; monied institutions such as the LACMA and the Broad, or upstart venues like the Ferus Gallery and Womanhouse; the grassroots creation of the Watts Towers and The Great Wall of Los Angeles, or the canonization of modern and postmodern starchitects. Media explored might include printmaking, performance art, installation, video art, graffiti and street art, and/or digital media. Engaged, active visits to museums, galleries, and other sites will be an important part of this class, as will learning to recognize and put in context the art and institutions studied.  Open to students in the Elon in L.A. program only.

Course Outcomes

1. Students should be able to articulate in writing and/or orally an understanding of the discipline of art history in relationship to the visual and material culture, museum studies, and/or built environments of Los Angeles.
2. Students should be able to locate, distinguish among, and describe the meaning of a variety of relevant textual, material, and visual art and architectural history sources.
3. Students should be able to articulate their own interpretation and analysis of these materials in both written and oral form.
4. Students should be able to articulate their own engagement with and reflection upon those materials in written and/or oral form.
