Counseling Services
Counseling Services is located in the R.N. Ellington Center for Health and Wellness. Student Counseling Services provides initial intake assessments, individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, consultation with the campus community regarding student mental health issues, outreach programs and community interventions, and referral resources.
Counseling Services works within a brief therapy model. Please refer to our Scope of Clinical Care Statement at http://www.elon.edu/e-web/students/counseling_services/expect.xhtml to better understand the general parameters regarding what services are beyond the scope of care within our office. For students whose conditions are beyond our scope of care, Counseling Services staff will work with those students to locate appropriate resources and providers in the community. Students are responsible for paying the costs incurred for services and treatment provided through independent providers.
Counseling Services provides services on an appointment-only basis, except in the event of a crisis or emergency. To schedule an appointment with Counseling Services, please call (336) 278-7280, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. Counseling Services staff members are also available by appointment to provide outreach and consultation services to student groups on a variety of mental health topics.
When a crisis/emergency is primarily a mental health concern, please consider the following options.
- Dial 911 first if there is an imminent risk and you need immediate assistance (e.g., potential of harm to self or others).
- During business hours Monday – Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm call Counseling Services at (336) 278-7280 or walk to Counseling Services’ office. Let the Program Assistant know it is an emergency. Please note, the program assistant will be out of the office during the noon hour, however a counselor will be available to respond to crises.
- After business hours :
- Access the Crisis Counselor on Call through the Student Life Emergency Response System by calling Campus Safety and Police at (336) 278-5555. Ask to speak with the Crisis Counselor on Call. Campus Safety and Police will relay the message to the Crisis Counselor on Call, who will then call the student to complete a brief risk assessment of the situation and determine steps for additional support or follow-up to ensure safety. This may include a referral to the hospital for an in-person assessment.
Please note, crisis management differs from providing counseling/psychotherapy after hours. The Crisis Counselor On-Call needs to remain available to respond to crisis/emergency situations, therefore if a student is not having an emergency/crisis and seeks counseling support after hours they will be referred to the office during business hours.
- Go to the emergency department of Alamance Regional Medical Center at 1240 Huffman Mill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215 or Cone Behavioral Health Hospital at 700 Walter Reed Drive, Greensboro NC 27403 For more information visit the website: Cone Health Behavioral Health
- Call the Cone Health Systems Behavioral Health Hot Line at 336-832-9700 or 800-711-2635for immediate assistance for mental health and substance abuse issues.
- Call National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255(TALK)
Students are always welcome to call the office for information regarding services and available support. More information about Elon University Counseling Services and other mental health resources may be found at the Counseling Services website.
