HED 235 INACTIVITY: THE THREAT OF A MODERN LIFESTYLE

President-elect John F. Kennedy said in 1960, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” Today the CDC projects that inactivity and poor diet will overtake smoking as the number one preventable cause of death, yet 25-35% of Americans are inactive. Economic, sociological, physiological and political factors influencing both the initiation and maintenance of an active lifestyle will be examined from a personal, national, and global perspective, with an eye on identifying current and future opportunities and challenges to increasing physical activi-ty/fitness, thereby mitigating the health threats associated with our modern lifestyle. Counts toward Society. Offered fall.
