PHIL 2101 The Power of Words: Culture, Conditioning
Mundane and colloquial verbal expressions can embody harmful histories and power dynamics. Our words and narratives represent elements of larger social systems, perpetuate cultural trends, and signify historical change over time. This course explores liberation theories and practical strategies such as constructive listening and counter-storytelling that can create inclusion and belonging. Connecting social analysis with ethnographic observations in the local community, students will identify empowering narratives to promote cross-cultural understanding and social equity across many contexts. This course only satisfies the CORE requirement when offered as a service learning course.
