MATH 1450 Mathematical Thinking and Quantitative Reasoning
The goal of Mathematical Thinking and Quantitative Reasoning is to help students develop intellectual mathematical abilities as well as see mathematics as a method to address current problem including social problems. Understanding how people learn from data may change the way students think about the world. Students will use Tukey’s state of the art data exploratory methods to analyze real data. Topics will include modern statistical reasoning, statistical modeling, linear regression, statistical inference, logarithmic and exponential modeling, and the conditions for inference which must hold in order to use statistical procedures. Other topics include logical reasoning, analysis of arguments, probability - 4 lecture hours. Purchase of a specific brand and model of a graphing calculator is required. Prerequisite: sufficient score on math placement exam.
MATH 1450 meets the Quantitative Literacy and Social Issues CORE requirement.
