EDU 3029 Early Literacy & Literature

This course provides students with the theoretical foundations for the development of literacy (reading, writing, listening, & speaking) in young children. Students learn the social, cultural, and linguistic factors that affect literacy development. Students study children’s literature including important authors and illustrators and uses of children’s literature for teachers and others working with young children. This course includes language structures and linguistics, including the basics of early reading (e.g., phonemes, phonemic awareness, phonics, and sound-symbol relationships). A fieldwork practicum tutoring reading in a culturally and linguistically diverse early childhood classroom is required. Spring semesters.
