Division of Communication, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences
Communication, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences Pathway
Division of Communication, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences (CFASS) Overview
The primary function of the Division of CFASS is to provide two years of study leading to the associate degree and/or transferability to a university and to provide college-level occupational programs to meet the needs of students who wish to qualify for immediate employment upon graduation. Students who do plan to pursue the baccalaureate should consult an advisor concerning degree requirements of the university to which transfer is intended. A Certificate of Achievement is awarded to those students completing only the major requirements of an occupational curriculum. An Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded to those students completing all courses listed in the degree curriculum of an occupational curriculum.
Another function of this division is to provide developmental courses for students whose high school grades, admission test scores, placement test scores and counseling interviews show them to need help in obtaining proficiency in the basic skills of Reading and English before attempting standard college courses.
Developmental courses are required when educational background and/or test scores indicate a weakness in the basic skills of English, Mathematics or Reading.
Suggested Transfer Plans
The Suggested Transfer Plans reflect the most current information at publication. Additional details concerning course transfer to other institutions are available in the Student Enrollment Center or from academic advisors in the instructional departments. A student should obtain authoritative information on course transferability from the institution to which the student plans to transfer. Disputes concerning course transferability are addressed in the Transfer Disputes section of this Catalog
Courses of Study
The curricula listed for the Division of CFASS are designed for students pursuing the associate degree and/or transfer to a university. On the Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts in Teaching, Associate of Applied Science, and certificates, there may be certain specializations in the division for which a package of courses is recommended. If Del Mar College does not offer a desired major, or if the student has not selected a specialization/major, Del Mar offers a multidisciplinary Liberal Arts degree. The multidisciplinary Liberal Arts degree equips students with coursework and skills optimal for transfer to the widest number of in-state and out-of-state institutions, while allowing for a small number of electives based on student educational and career interest. All students should work with an academic advisor or career counselor to select an appropriate major and to ensure their coursework aligns for transfer to a 4-year institution.
On the Associate of Applied Science degree and certificate, all students who seek transfer should work with an academic advisor or career counselor to select an appropriate major and to ensure their coursework aligns for transfer to a 4-year institution.
