Division of Communication, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences (CFASS) Overview
The primary function of the Division of CFASS is to provide two years of study leading to the associate degree and/or transferability to a university. Another function of this division is to provide developmental courses for students whose high school grades, admission test scores, placement test scores and counseling interviews show them to need help in obtaining proficiency in the basic skills of Reading and English before attempting standard college courses.
Developmental courses are required when educational background and/or test scores indicate a weakness in the basic skills of English, Mathematics or Reading.
Courses of Study
The curricula listed for the Division of CFASS are designed for students pursuing the associate degree and/or transfer to a university. On the Associate in Arts, Associate of Arts in Teaching, Associate in Applied Science, and certificates, there may be certain specializations in the division for which a package of courses is recommended. If Del Mar College does not offer a desired major, or if the student has not selected a specialization/major, Del Mar offers a multidisciplinary Liberal Arts degree. The multidisciplinary Liberal Arts degree equips students with coursework and skills optimal for transfer to the widest number of in-state and out-of-state institutions, while allowing for a small number of electives based on student educational and career interest. All students should work with an academic advisor or career counselor to select an appropriate major and to ensure their coursework aligns for transfer to a 4-year institution.
