Program Mission, Description, and Outcomes
Mission:
The mission of the Social and Human Services Addictions Studies Specialization Certificate is to provide skills that are necessary for entry level employment as human services practitioners in addictions and chemical dependency service agencies. This certificate is also intended to cross-train current employees in human and social services agencies to become effective professionals that will provide services to help people overcome addiction and chemical dependency.
Description:
The Social and Human Services Addictions Studies Specialization certificate is designed for students who do not want to undertake the supporting academic courses required for the A.S. college degree, but who want to receive the training for entry level employment in addictions counseling and rehabilitation agencies. The certificate is also designed to cross-train current employees in human and social services agencies to become effective professionals that will provide services to help people overcome addiction and chemical dependency. The curriculum includes coursework in the following areas: Addictions, Chemical Dependency, Psychopharmacology, Counseling, Ethics, and Treatment Planning, and includes a professionally supervised externship that is offered at various human services agencies throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties. Credits earned in this certificate program may be applied toward the AS Degree in Social and Human Services (Addictions Specialization) - 200700.
Outcomes:
Graduates of the program will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Human Services profession.
- Discuss the role(s) of the Human Services worker in evaluating clients with substance abuse issues.
- Describe the goals and tasks of the Human Services worker.
- Exhibit the skills necessary for effective professional work in the Human Services profession.
- Understand the established ethics along with the legal issues associated with the Human Services profession.

Program Tuition and Fees: $2,457*
Access Fee: $30 ($1.26 per credit)
Assessment Fee: $33
Lab Fees (including liability insurance): $8.00
Drug Screen - Background Check: $90 (estimate - due at time of externship)
*In-state tuition only; out-of-state tuition will be higher.

Additional Admission Requirements
- Program specific and general education courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.
- Attend mandatory program orientation.
- This program requires successful completion of externship hours at a Daytona State College approved agency. Participation in externships will be contingent on the satisfactory completion of a drug screen and a background check consisting of a fingerprint check of state and federal criminal history information. The exact background check will be determined by the specific sponsoring externship agency.
- Students will be held accountable for the policies and procedures outlined in the College Student handbook.

The typical length of this program is two (2) semesters (30 weeks) for a full-time student, 38% graduating within 2 semesters for 2014-15. The Florida Education and Training Placement Information Program (FETPIP) lists the placement rate (2013-14) for this field at 100%.
