Student Disability Services
The Student Disability Services (SDS) Office is available to offer and provide special assistance to students with a documented disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). For career information, guidance, and reasonable accommodations, those with disabilities should contact the Student Disability Services Office before deciding upon a program area.
Applicants with substantial needs that will require planning, coordination, and time are asked to allow the College adequate time to investigate and,students are allowed one semester of courtesy accommodations if needed while obtaining documentation.
Students who provide official current documentation describing their disability can receive support services to meet their individual needs in order to experience academic success. Documentation may include medical and/or psychological reports, as well as previous Individual Education Plans from other schools. Other criteria may include:
- An Assessment done within the past three years.
- The report should document a specific diagnosis or condition.
- The report should indicate why that particular disorder creates a significant impact on academic performance.
- The report should include suggested accommodations that are reasonable to provide.
- Document(s) must be on letterhead, dated, and signed by a qualified professional.
Student Disability Services provides the following:
- Advisement
- Interpreter services for the deaf or hearing impaired (advanced notice is required).
- Special testing accommodations (by appointment)
- Assistance with registration
- Visual aids
- Assistive Technology
- Tape recorders
- Extended testing time
- Textbooks in alternative format
- Braille Services
- Other reasonable accommodations
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and the Veterans Administration Vocational Rehabilitation for disabled veterans are two certifying agencies that work closely with Student Disability Services (SDS) at Columbus Technical College.
