ANT 322 Anthropology of Globalization
Globalization refers to the massive and increasing interconnection of social, economic, political, and cultural life through the development of technology and the movement of money, things, people, and ideas. Social scientists have noted that the benefits of these changes are unevenly distributed. This course explores cultural and political-economic theories of globalization through an anthropological lens, which focuses on globalization’s lived realities (from the dismal to the hopeful). We will interrogate themes of opportunity and inequality, cultural resistance and cultural assimilation, and the new forms of coalition and violence these changes enable.
