HIS 435 Spirits, Gods and Ghosts of East Asia
This class examines ghost stories and folk tales of East Asia, how they have been shaped by historical events and how they have evolved and survived through the centuries from stories passed down from parent to child to big-budget horror films. How do the “ghost stories” of East Asia differ from our expectations? When is a ghost a spirit, and when is it a god? Students will write, produce and record podcasts focused on a spirit, tale or film of their choice.
