MHC 8065 Spirituality and Counseling: Advanced Seminar

This course explores the application of basic and advanced counseling skills to spiritual and existential themes that arise in counseling. Using role-plays, reflection journals, and group presentations, students will practice assessing implicit and explicit themes, helping clients to identify healthy coping, labeling spiritual struggles, and clarifying personal and communal values. The American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics and multicultural competences, and the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) competencies will guide the discussion of ethical practice and violations, as well as the role of counselor self-awareness and countertransference when addressing spiritual themes in counseling.
