RELS 4321 Our Lady of Guadalupe

The course examines the origins and development of the Our Lady of Guadalupe tradition as an icon of devotion and social justice in Mexican-American Catholicism and as a global religious phenomenon. Students explore the stories, images, and traditions of Our Lady of Guadalupe from multiple perspectives, including history, culture, art, gender, race & ethnicity, indigeneity, ethnography, politics & social activism, and theology. Through interdisciplinary study, students reflect upon Guadalupe’s meaning in their own lives and within the context of San Antonio and the borderlands.
