ENGL 4315 Environmental Discourse

Part of the Literary Studies and Criticism branch, or the Language Arts and Linguistic branch of the UIW English program, this course offers a focused study of Environmental Discourse from an ecocritical perspective. The course will focus on American Ecological Writings. We will analyze the various discourses that have sought to describe, reflect, exploit and celebrate our environment. Readings from Botany, Natural History, Journalism, Fiction and Poetry demonstrate the diversity of representational choices humans have made in order to conceptualize and interpret nature and our relationship to it. We will pay particular attention to the way in which "writing" a subject, "employing a rhetorical frame," "changes" a subject.
