CNSL 6425 Advanced Counseling Skills & Techniques

his course is an advanced course for prospective counselors who seek to improve their listening skills, responding skills, interpersonal effectiveness, and problem solving abilities. The course is designed primarily as a personal experience in practicing and advanced interpersonal skills. The course uses an experiential format and requires participation in exercises, role play, discussions, and videotaping.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the following outcome-based learning skills:

  1. The skills of positioning, posture, observing and listening.
  2. Discovering strategies for adapting and accommodating the counseling process to client culture, context, abilities, and preferences
  3. Developing goal consensus and collaborative decision-making in the counseling process
  4. The skills of record-keeping and documentation.
  5. Discrimination skills of affect, feeling, and nonverbal communication.
  6. Identifying and developing responsive skills of: concreteness, respect, focusing, and questioning.
  7. Identifying and developing personalizing skills of: interchangeable responses, responses to content, feeling, and meaning.
