CWP 265 Feminist Rhetorics and Social Change

This course explores feminist “stand and speak” rhetorical strategies such as language, argument, and persuasion as tools to illuminate and contest gender-based oppression and drive social change. We will examine historical and contemporary works that speak back to rhetorical traditions to see how intersectional feminist communication challenges power structures. In this class, we access a genealogy of feminist rhetors who serve as exemplars – and cautions – for later waves in feminism and for their own contemporary visions of social change. The class positions our study of feminist rhetorics within identities and experiences in U.S. culture through a range of rhetorical forms including speeches, journals, poetry, demonstrations, art, media, and essays.
