MUSC 345 Music Contracts and Financial Management

In this course, students will learn how to evaluate and assess music recording contracts, composer and publishing agreements, and music contracts for film and TV synchronization. This includes topics such as advances, options, conditions, terms, responsibilities, and compensation. Students will also learn how to analyze legal matters related to groups (including band agreements, departures, band names, and key members) and live concert contracts (including riders, fees, deal points, and the legal responsibilities of promoters, event managers, and venue owners). A secondary goal of this course is for students to understand best practices in the music industry for tax planning and preparation, record keeping, and budgeting. This course provides a deep dive into themes covered in MUSC 245 Introduction to the Music Industry. This course is sponsored by the John Branca Institute for Music.
