ARTS 106 Ceramic Fundamentals

This course introduces students to the technical and conceptual foundations of ceramics. Through sculptural projects, visiting artist lectures, readings, and group discussions, students will learn core hand-building techniques and progressively expand their skills through assignments that increase in both engineering and conceptual complexity.

The semester begins with functional forms that teach fundamental clay-working processes. Assignments will expand in complexity with sculptural works, interactive pieces, and installation-based projects. The course also covers essential ceramic chemistry, including clay and glaze composition and the transformations that occur within the kiln.

By the end of the course, students will know how to create ceramic objects, articulate and critique artistic intentions, and participate meaningfully in broader cultural conversations surrounding contemporary ceramic art making and objects.

A course materials fee will be charged to the student's account. For the fee amount, please see the Special Fees section of the college catalog: https://oxy.smartcatalogiq.com/en/current/catalog/tuition-fees-and-expenses/special-fees
