COGS 260 Language and Culture in the Deaf Communities

This class is an introduction to deaf communities and sign languages around the globe, with a focus on the analysis of American Sign Language (ASL). We will make an overview of the fundamental concepts of sign language linguistics and investigate how sign languages parallel with spoken languages at different levels of the structure because they all draw on the same linguistic and cognitive capacities. We will also explore the differences in sign languages because they are signed and seen. This course will also touch on the disability as diversity and discuss recent development in the disability studies through the lens of deaf communities, including deaf identity, deaf history, and deaf culture as an important contribution to the diversity in the US.
