MUSC 111 Topics in Jazz History
This course will survey the evolution of jazz from its roots to the present. We will analyze the influence of peoples of various cultures on repertoire, jazz techniques, and styles. Special attention will be paid to some of the more important and influential performers. Through extensive listening and reading, this class will explore how the paradigms of African American cultural experience are deeply interwoven within the musical narratives of the U.S. and its cultural satellites. No prior musical training is necessary.
