OC4610 Wave and Surf Forecasting

Theory and prediction of wind-generated ocean waves. Spectral transformation of waves from deep to shallow water. Prediction of surf and wave related influences on operations. Prerequisites: OC3150, OC4211.00The purpose of this course is to  introduce the physics behind surface gravity waves, their generation, what models are used for both generation and propagation, and how this will affect naval operations.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Students will learn the physics behind wave models and be able to interpret wave forecasts with an emphasis on model variability.
  • Students will be able to access data products for surf forecasting from several models and be able to compare their output.
