EDU.5480 Literacy Methods for Early Childhood Education

Students will acquire the practical and theoretical knowledge needed to guide the literacy development of young children. They will explore the developmental influences on preschool learning and examine the role of language in supporting literacy development and consider research-based early literacy activities and methods such as book reading, writing activities using invented spelling, storytelling, as well as other activities that foster phonemic awareness, print concepts, phonics skills, vocabulary development, and comprehension. Students will examine methods and materials to support literacy development. They will also consider the role of families in supporting the literacy development of young children. Field experience required.
