ARH 1026 Mexican Art of the 20th Century

This course will survey the history of 20th century Mexican art through lectures, class discussions, and assigned readings. The course will focus on the strong links between Mexico's tumultuous social and political history and developments in Mexican painting and sculpture. Topics to be explored include: the Mexican mural movement (1923-1974) and its artists including Diego Rivera, Jose Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, the influence of indigenous and popular art, the imagery of women emphasizing the work of Frida Kahlo, and the effect of international post-modernism on Mexican art.
