HLT 5120 Strategies for School and Community Health
This course will examine the use of differing strategies to enhance school and community health for K-12 grade students. The various aspects that affect health will be explored both in terms of knowledge content and effective delivery in the field of health education. Individuals will examine: considerations for behavior change, methods of instruction and intervention, technology, use of media, health disparities, comprehensive community health planning and development, and special challenges in health education. These domains will be researched, discussed and reviewed throughout the semester through individual and group work. Health disparities and inequities are outlined and methods delivered for women, sexual minorities, racial-ethnic minorities and individuals with learning disorders in the health education K-12 spectrum are further explored. Each individual will formulate an understanding and proficiency in conducting health education programs. Furthermore, the student will explore case studies for hands on field experience to compare and contrast effective health education programs versus to non-effective programs in both an education and community setting. In addition, students will be required to do ten field hours in an approved educational/community setting.
