ENG5124 Exploring Fantasy Worlds
This seminar will explore the use of alternate realities and fantastic locales in literature from medieval times to today. We will discuss the historical roots of modern fantasy, stylistic elements common in fantasy literature, and archetypal themes. We will study subgenres, discuss the differences between high and low fantasy, and examine the growing importance of fantasy in popular culture. Students will also engage with critical texts about the fantasy genre and the specific works covered in the course. Students will complete several short essay assignments, and ultimately produce a longer final essay that incorporates secondary sources.
