SOC 3051 Mass Media & Society

An examination of the social, political and economic contexts in which American mass media(broadcasters and publishers, advertisers and regulators, among others) and their audiences have developed and operate today. Topics may include: concentration of media ownership and control; theeffects of political economy, ideology and organizational structure on news management; the media's role in movements for social change in the U.S. and Third World; personal and political consequences of media practice; and alternatives to the current structure of the media.
