This seminar takes as its inspiration Vicki Goldberg146s 1991 book, "The Power of Photography: How Photographs Changed our Lives" (Abbeville). We will look at the role photographs have played in shaping attitudes, laws and culture since its public announcement in 1839.Topics will include: The Invention of Photography; The Photograph as Witness; The Eye of Discovery; Political Persuasion through Photography; Photography and the Rise of Celebrity Culture; Photography and the Art World; The Camera and Social Reform;The Rise of News Photography; The Photo Magazines (LIFE and LOOK); The Rise of TV; and,Photography in the 21st Century.
