IRSH 5091 POLITICS AND RELIGION IN IRELAND
This course will examine the relationship between religion and politics as it affected, and indeed defined the conflict between native and colonial in Ireland over three centuries. Topics covered will include the Reformation, the Tudor conquest of Ireland, the Penal Laws, the emergence of "Protestant ascendancy" in the 18th century and, finally, the evolution of entrenched oppositional religious identities which has produced such a unique and complex legacy in the 20th century. Research paper required.
