Doctor of Education in Education Leadership

On June 22, 2010, the Board of Regents of the State of New York approved an amendment to our master plan authorizing Manhattanville College’s first program at the doctoral level, an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. The purpose of the doctoral program is to meet the needs of mid-career professionals who have leadership experience in public or private schools, community programs, governmental agencies, or NGOs with major education initiatives. This program builds on Manhattanville’s Educational Leadership Master’s and Professional Diploma certification programs for building level and/or district-level leadership.

Accepted students will have early career leadership experience and the initial licensure/certification/program requirements for their chosen career path as leaders in education. Students complete a three-year program of study that tightly integrates coursework, field experiences, and applied research (59 semester hours of post-master’s credit including dissertation). The focus is on preparing leaders to work in changing suburbs and small cities, and the signature pedagogy is problem-based learning. Doctoral program experiences are organized around five themes: leading learning organizations, becoming a sophisticated practitioner-scholar, developing self and others, participating in professional and policy-making communities, and facilitating responsive education programs. The program offers the option to do a three-article dissertation or a traditional five-chapter dissertation.

Executive Ed.D Track for “ABD’s”

The Executive Ed.D. program is designed specifically for those who were enrolled in a doctoral program and completed all requirements but the dissertation (known as “ABD”.) The Executive Ed.D. offers advanced doctoral students the opportunity to complete their degree by enrolling in a twenty (20) semester credit experience over two academic years that offers a customized and individualized course of study, with a focus on current problems of practice, the dissertation process, and research in educational leadership. The program consists of a blend of course formats (for example, in person on-campus for summer sessions and on-line synchronous courses) in preparing for and completing the doctoral dissertation.

Higher Education Leadership Concentration

The Higher Education Leadership Concentration within the Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership is for students who wish to enter or are already working in faculty and administrative roles in colleges and universities, state education agencies, and postsecondary-related nonprofits. Students take six courses unique to this concentration as part of the 59-credit program required for the doctoral degree. Students who complete this concentration will understand the landscape of higher education (e.g., political, economic, historical, social, and organizational) and have the theoretical and research foundation needed to participate more fully in communities of practice as engaged practitioner-scholars in higher education and other related environments. Students are admitted to this program once a year and follow a cohort model.
