Computer Information Systems (ARTV, BCIS, COSC, IMED, ITCC, ITNW, ITSC, ITSE, ITSW, ITSY, POFI)

The Computer Information Systems (CIS) program offers an Associate in Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) with specializations in Mobile Apps-Media and Web Development, Networking and Cyber Security Technology, and Personal Computer Software Specialist. In addition, the program offers the computer programming courses that in part comprise the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s (THECB) Computer Science Field of Study. This field of study is incorporated into an Associate of Science degree. The CIS program also offers five skills-based certificates and 3 Occupational Skills awards.

Courses are practical in nature. Lectures are supplemented by dedicated labs where emphasis is placed on the progressive attainment of operating and technical administrative skills in a "hands-on" environment. In "state of the art" computer labs, students enjoy the experiences of modern technology, including more than two hundred network-based workstations and various specialized software environments. Instruction is delivered in both PC and Macintosh platforms.

Computer Science and Computer Information Systems are complex fields offering many career opportunities. Students considering a career in computer technology or who may have a university transfer objective are encouraged to consult with advisors from the Computer Technology Department to ensure a well-planned curriculum strategy and the seamless transferability of coursework to university institutions.

All of the department’s AAS awards are applicable towards a baccalaureate degree. The department has articulation agreements with Texas A&M University at San Antonio, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and with South Texas College. Please consult with the Computer Technology Department for more details.
