Art Major

The Art major is divided into three tracks. Studio Art, Art History and a Combined Studio Art and Art History.

Requirements

Art History Track

The major consists of a minimum of 10 courses:

ART 101Introduction to Art History I

ART 102Introduction to Art History II

ART 140Art and Architecture of World Traditions: Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania

ART 340Seminar in Art History

Three studio electives

Three additional art electives

The three additional art electives must include at least two 200-level art history courses, excluding honors.

Studio Art Track

The major consists of a minimum of 10 courses:

ART 101Introduction to Art History I

ART 102Introduction to Art History II

ART 140Art and Architecture of World Traditions: Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania

ART 206Art Materials and Methods

ART 306Capstone: Senior Studio Seminar

Three 100-level studio electives

One 200-level studio elective

One additional studio elective

Honors cannot be used to complete the one additional studio elective.

Combined Art History/Studio Art Track

The major consists of a minimum of 10 courses:
Two from

ART 101Introduction to Art History I

ART 102Introduction to Art History II

ART 140Art and Architecture of World Traditions: Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania

 

ART 206Art Materials and Methods

ART 306Capstone: Senior Studio Seminar

Two 100-level studio electives

One 200- or 300- level Studio Art course

One 300-level Art History seminar

Two 200- or 300- level Art History courses

 

The combined Studio Art and Art History major consists of a minimum of 10 courses:

These are:

2 courses in Art History selected from Art 101, 102, 140

2 courses in studio at the 100 level

Art History Seminar (300 level)

Studio Capstone (306 level)

Plus: 4 courses which must be 200 or 300 level from both Art History and Studio Art

Study of at least one foreign language through the intermediate level is strongly recommended for those contemplating graduate study in art history. The department is committed to strong student advising and may recommend courses in other departments based on the programmatic needs of individual students.
