PHI 423 Senior Seminar in Justice and Law

This is a senior seminar focusing on the philosophical concepts of justice and law.  This course can have a topical focus or issue chosen by the instructor. Semester topics can be either theoretical or applied, and may include an advanced survey of contemporary philosophical theories of law and/or justice;  a textual analysis of one philosophical classic on law and/or justice; the philosophy of punishment and retribution; justice - distributive and compensatory; the impact of race, gender, and class on the contemporary philosophical analysis of law and/or justice.  Students will read intensively in both primary and secondary texts, conduct a research project appropriate to the subject, and complete a seminar paper on the model of a philosophical journal article.
