DAN 3420 AFRICAN DANCE III

Advanced study of the cultural history, movement, and rhythmic vocabulary of West African dance.  In this course students will learn complex dances from several different ethnic cultures in West Africa. The historical, social, cultural, and/or religious contents of each dance will be presented. Focus will be given to mastery of the texture, effort, shape, and dynamics within the choreography.

  1. Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

    1. Demonstrate through dancing the formal connections between specific musical accompaniment while executing complex phrasing

    2. Demonstrate increased sensitivity to music vocabulary provided by accompanists

    3. Demonstrate a deep exploration of the qualitative aspects of movement sequences and style that corresponds to West African ethnic groups and rituals which is intrinsic to and necessary for the performance of advanced level African dances.
