COM 2000 INCLUSIVE COMMUNICATION LEADERSHIP

This course is an introduction to fundamental issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion and provides opportunities for students to practice interpersonal, small group and written communications skills essential for developing, working on, leading and advocating for diverse, inclusive teams.

Students will explore best practices for building, leading, and maintaining inclusive teams; legal issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion such as discrimination and harassment; and issues concerning “media” and “identity groups” and “intersections of identity” such as media portrayals, stereotypes, ownership, social power, media production and audience perception.

Students should gain a better appreciation for how people with varied backgrounds, life experiences, and cultural competencies often have different and valid perspectives. Using this awareness of the validity of differing perspectives, students should be more mindful content consumers and more ethical and inclusive content producers.
