Program Outcomes
Like any traditional liberal arts major, the study of theatre and drama is a longstanding and unique approach to understanding the world. Unlike other liberal arts majors, the study of theatre and drama historically has been interdisciplinary—housed between departments or shifting from department to department over time. The inseparable teaching of both drama and theatre has been shared in higher education among English professors, theatre historians, and theatre practitioners. Studying plays requires the context of literary traditions and an understanding of written language. Studying performance requires the context of cultural traditions and an understanding of the conversation among many languages: verbal, musical, physical, and scenic. Drama and Theatre Studies embraces drama/theatre’s inherent interdisciplinarity and offers students a program that combines textual analysis, theatre history, hands-on theatre performance, and dramatic theory.
In addition, majors have multiple opportunities to explore dramaturgy, devising theatre, and playwriting. They can participate in program-specific study abroad and are encouraged and supported in undergraduate research opportunities. There is no audition required for this program. Our graduates go on to careers in: arts administration, arts education, comedy, film and television, heritage and museums, higher education, non-profit theatre, music, law, medicine, theatre for young audiences, playwriting, public relations, as well as graduate studies.
