EAS 303 SINO-US CULTURAL DIPLOMACY

This course examines cultural exchange as a tool of diplomacy between China and the United States from the late 19th century to today. Through case studies including the Chinese Educational Mission, Pearl S. Buck's literary influence, Nixon-era ping-pong diplomacy, Hollywood representations of China, and contemporary Confucius Institute controversies, students will analyze how art, education, sports, and popular culture have shaped bilateral relations. We explore whether cultural understanding can transcend political tensions in this critical global relationship.
