PMIN 3360 Prophets and Catholic Social Teaching
Students explore the roots of the Catholic Social Teaching in the writings of the Prophets by examining how the Prophets preserved a deep tradition of social justice in Israel, as found in the Old Testament. Students will examine how this prophetic tradition, affirmed and deepened by the Gospel, has been utilized in papal and episcopal writings that resulted in the current Catholic Social Teaching. This examination will follow the seven themes presented by the US Bishops as a summary of the Catholic Social Doctrine: Dignity of the Human Person and the Right to Life, Human Rights and Responsibilities, The Call to Family, Community, and Participation, The Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers, Solidarity, and Care and Stewardship of God's Creation. Attention will be given to how the writings of the prophets can be used today to promote the Catholic Social Teachings.
