SPA 325 TEACHING & LEARNING SPANISH
Practical skills for the teaching of Spanish with techniques for fostering a communicative environment, language in context and community engagement. The course analyzes concepts of Foreign Language pedagogy, applied linguistics, the benefits of bilingualism, whole language programs, International Baccalaureate, national standards, Spanglish, and learning styles, with assessment-based and creative activities, virtual and in-person observations, and teaching observations in local schools. Conducted in Spanish, this course counts toward the Hispanic Studies and Latin American and Latino Studies majors and minors, and is required by the State Board of Education for certification.
Notes
This course will be particularly suited to those working toward teaching certification (State of Connecticut requirement), planning graduate study in Spanish, preparing a Fulbright Teaching application or entering fields where team collaboration, group and individual presentations, critical skills and independent thinking are prized. This course may be taken at the 200, 300, or 400 level as requirements will vary depending on the level chosen. State Certification reflects work done on the 300 or 400 level. This course may not be taken on more than one level.
