SLA 246 COLD WAR CULTURES

This course examines Soviet and American narratives of a global “battle” between communism and capitalism: tales of spies, astronauts, defectors, and scientists that defined heroism and patriotism for popular audiences. The course also considers the role of the state in cultural production, as well as anti-communist sentiment as justification for homophobia, racism, and narrowly defined “family values” in the United States.
