SLA 203 MIGRATION AND EASTERN EUROPE

An examination of migration to and from Eastern Europe in geographical, political, and historical context. Case studies from Russia, the Soviet Union, the Balkan Peninsula, and Central Asia expose the authoritarian institutions that control the bodily movement of both citizens and the stateless and the ways that “newcomers” shape their local environments. Course content is in English. Prior knowledge of the region is welcome, but not expected. Students who sign up for the Jewish Studies listing will complete a Jewish-themed final project.
