SLA 185 LITERARY EXCLUSION

Literary Exclusion in Transnational Context.  Examination of the formation of cultural canons in a transnational context, with a focus on the exclusion of minoritized writers from the literary process. Case studies include renowned writers who published little during their lifetimes (such as Emily Dickinson, Karolina Pavlova, Bruno Schultz, and Franz Kafka), as well as those whose writing was posthumously rediscovered (Irène Némirovsky and Zora Neale Hurston). The course examines how literary expectations of women, Jewish, and African American writers have shaped their oeuvre; how critics have responded to minoritized writers in different historical and cultural contexts; and the extent to which particular writers have been actively excluded from publishing.
