PHI 274 BIG IDEAS OF THE 18TH CENTURY

The 18th century ended in two major revolutions, but the ideas that produced them had been developing all century long. This course examines the major ideas and intellectual trends that shaped the century of “The Enlightenment.” Topics may include key political and moral ideas, social contract theory, political economy, science and reason, rational religion, religious tolerance, and materialism and atheism.
