Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Music

An examination of western art musics from the earliest notated examples through the end of the Baroque era. Through its focus on how historical and social changes affect (and are affected by) musical developments, the course investigates the ways in which musical cultures intersect with empire, war, plagues, and heresy. Students will encounter a wide variety of pieces, including works composed for sacred and secular settings and written for vocal and/or instrumental musical forces by Josquin, Monteverdi, J.S. Bach, and Handel, among many others.
